Micro-plastic not so Fantastic:
Ideally we would all have clothes made without synthetic materials. However, if like me you are a big secondhand shopper, and also refuse to throw clothes away just because they aren’t 100% natural, every time we do a clothes wash, countless plastic fibers from synthetic textiles are making their way from our washing machines into rivers and oceans! Not good.
Enter- the GuppyFriend:
The Guppyfriend washing bag is the first (and at time of writing the only) washing bag that targets this micro-plastic pollution issue when washing synthetic fabrics. Developed by the non-profit STOP! Micro Waste organisation, this self-cleaning fabric bag is made of a specially designed micro-filter material, and works by filtering out the tiniest microfibers released from textiles during washing, how cool is that?! You simply collect the fibers and dispose of them properly after each wash!
How to use:
Put synthetic textiles into the Guppyfriend. Only ever half fill the bag, and separate colors.
Close the Guppyfriend and wash as usual.
Take out wet textiles after washing.
Remove the released microfibers from hems inside of Guppyfriend and dispose properly.
See video below for a full demonstration on how to use this magic bag.
STOP! Micro Waste Organisation:
The STOP! Micro Waste organisation is a non-profit organisation initiated by LANGBRETT, a group of surfers and nature lovers in Germany. They are dedicated to reducing the plastic pollution of our rivers and oceans, and use the revenue from GuppyFriend bag sales for projects including a ‘STOP! Plastic Academy’ for children, where they teach children about plastic pollution, but also ways of avoiding plastics and ways of reusing and recycling plastic.

Apart from the zipper the bag is entirely made of Polyamide 6.6 (Yes that is plastic, as sadly recycled materials just can’t do such a high tec job like filtering, yet). The material is untreated, undyed, and does not contain any additives. It’s pure and can even be used in a medical context. It also does not shed micro-plastics itself when washed.
The washing bag is also designed so it can easily be recycled with identical materials at the end of its lifecycle: The whole bag – except the zipper – is made of a single material. You can even send the bag back to GuppyFriend at the end of its lifecycle. GuppyFriend will reuse and eventually recycle them into new Guppyfriend Washing Bags. How amazing is that?

It is a big bag!
